Lovozero only became the center of “Sami reindeer herding” on the Kola Peninsula after the death of Stalin. Visitors today are greeted by standard five-story Soviet apartment buildings along with quasi-modernist structures such as a hotel shaped like a teepee and a stylized socialist-realist reindeer on the town's entrance sign. One cannot help but notice the jarring contrast between the place's identity as a pastoral village and the urban architecture adorning the streets. There are also plenty of reminders of Sami culture, such as the Museum of the History of Kola Sami and the National Cultural Center of the Sami, which celebrate Lovozero's status as a traditional homeland for Sami and their reindeer.120 Yet such an impression reveals only part of the story.
An old yet average-sized settlement of the Sami dating back to the sixteenth century, Lovozero first became a home of large-scale reindeer herding with the Komi migration in the late nineteenth century. At the time of collectivization, Komi households dominated the Tundra collective farm based there.121 It was the influx of 435 Sami from resettled villages to Lovozero in the 1960s that more than doubled its Sami population.122 As Natalia Gutsol, Svetlana Vinogradova, and Antonina Samorukova observe, “the contemporary role of Lovozero as an ethnic and reindeer-herding center on the Kola Peninsula came about as the result of historical, political, and socio-economic processes and events that occurred in the Murmansk region during the twentieth century.”123
